If you’ve ever been curious about boudoir photography but not entirely sure what to expect, you’re not alone. I have noticed that most people walk into a boudoir photoshoot without any prior experience, but most have wanted to book a session for years. I want my clients to walk away from my sessions feeling confident and at ease, but I also want them to walk into sessions the same way.

At its core, boudoir captures you exactly as you are. It isn’t about performing for the camera or pretending to be someone different. Through the experience, you can become more and more comfortable in your own skin and leave with photos that reflect that personal connection.

What is boudoir photography?

Boudoir photography is an intimate, solo portrait experience. Boudoir photography has changed over the years, originally starting as scandalous postcards and magazines in the early 1900s, to the empowering photography of today. This shift speaks to a growing interest in self-expression and self-love. Many people who book a boudoir session are interested in seeing themselves in an honest, unobstructed way. Boudoir is the perfect way to get in touch with your individuality and appreciate what makes you beautiful.

Prepping for your session

Once you book a boudoir photo session with me, I will help guide you through everything you need to know and do to prepare. Most of the preparations are the same for a typical photography session. This usually includes:

  • Selecting a theme for the session
  • Choosing outfits and accessories
  • Identifying a location
  • Making styling choices for hair and makeup

What to expect during your boudoir photo session

Most people are surprised by their session. It’s no surprise that boudoir has gained popularity in the last decade or so, as it is a means of growing confidence and discovering personal beauty.

I treat each session like any photography shoot–I look for the relaxed, honest moments that show the real you. I will walk you through poses, suggest certain angles, and give you encouragement through the entire process. Here are some things I like to do throughout my boudoir sessions:

  • Warmup Photos: This helps you get comfortable in front of the camera and helps me make some initial creative decisions
  • Music: Many clients enjoy some background music to help them feel more at ease.
  • Props: Props are a game-changer. A chair, a book, or even a blanket can make the photos feel more personalized.
  • Outfit Changes: It’s fun to switch up your outfit or utilize layering to add variety to your album.

Boudoir for every body

One of the biggest fears people have is that they aren’t a model. But boudoir is not about looking like someone different, but is really about becoming the best version of yourself. Many clients are people simply looking for an experience that makes them feel beautiful. And afterwards, they are able to look back on the experience with their photos. Some of my clients include:

  • New and expecting mothers celebrating their changing bodies
  • Brides-to-be preparing for their wedding day
  • Newly single women stepping into a new chapter
  • Women embracing personal transformation
